Academic Research on Wireless Community Networks

Submitted by Ced on Thu, 2008-03-20 05:24.
Hello, I'm a French PhD student in sociology. My research focuses on "innovations made by and for users". I have decided to particularly focus on "Wireless Community Networks" which are illustrative of a new type of approach more autonomous, alternative and civic.

Finally a map on wifimaps.

Submitted by JamesG on Mon, 2008-02-18 16:40.

So I got tired of not being able to upload my own data, so I hand drew (well, via mouse) a few access points that I've discovered in my area. This is what i'll be doing until the database is back up, and online. Sorry for the confusion on the map itself. Blue is insecure, Red is secured. Macs and SSIDs hidden for privacy, and gps data i couldn't get. It took too long to use the damn calculator with my sextant to figure out the location of my laptop. I just approximated everything.

Yeah MS PAINT!

WeFi has announced a WiFi mapping contest (http://wefi.com/wicket/contest.html). Contest rules are simple – participants upload their wardriving logs, and whoever uploads the most Access Points by the end of February, wins their choice of a Wii game console , an iPod Touch, or an Amex giftcard.

Dear wifimaps,

So after a year or more of the original you being down. Your developers are getting back to it. Yay!
And the war drivers who put their tools away are going to be getting back to business. Personally I've acquired some new tools for my wardriving tactics. Namely A CarPC, as I've been wanting one for some time now, I finally bought something great! It's installed, and ready for me to build it up and get it rolling.

Development Machine assigned

Submitted by drewzhrodague on Sat, 2007-11-03 11:51.

C at work chucked a few dual Athlon mainboards which, to the amusement of our friendly IT guys, I promptly brought home. I scored a nice rack chassis, and tossed the two disks, some DIMMs from Gus's place, and this neat new power supply. I used the sole working mainboard from the three that I brought home, and an unimpressive-but-working PCI SATA controller. This is our development machine

Disks Ordered

Submitted by drewzhrodague on Thu, 2007-10-11 12:55.

I ordered disks yesterday, which will allow us to not only load our data from archives, but also to homogenize it into a new schema. I am looking for developers who are interested in helping us out with this process as well. If you are interested in WiFi and GIS, we'd love to have your help. Stay tuned for the CVS tree announcement!
